                           THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

Dear Members,

As many of you are aware, I was recently elected as a new director by the Council members.
Subsequently, I was honored to be elected as President by the directors at the annual meeting at
the Stone Mountain Games. I am very optimistic about the upcoming year. I have a great deal of
confidence in our current board, and look forward to working with everyone.
I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I am an attorney, as well
as a CPA, practicing law in Dallas, Texas. Because the Clan Wallace Society is a Texas
corporation, I am in a unique position to contribute to the Society by providing both my legal and
 accounting expertise.
I also have strong emotional ties to the Clan Wallace Society. My father, Joe Wallace, assisted
Charles Wallace in founding the Clan Wallace Society. As a result, I have been instilled with the
pride of my Scottish heritage and recognize the importance of the Society in continuing the
Scottish traditions in the United States.
I want to thank all the individuals who keep the Society running smoothly. Without their
dedication, the Society would not exist. I also want to send a special thanks for all their extra
effort to Charlie and Barbara Wrenn, Tom and Susan Wallace, Chuck Bearman, and all the
members setting up tents at the games. Keep up the great work! Please feel free to contact me if
 you have comments and suggestions.

                          NEWS FROM THE CONVENERS

We received the following letter from Dick & Janice Wallace of Marysville, CA.
We need help! We will be unable to repeat our 22 game schedule in 1998. Our daughter is
recovering from a difficult pregnancy and will need our help. Even though we consider all
Wallace's our family, our immediate family must come first. Our schedule will allow us only 14
games this year in Northern California and Nevada.
We are writing letters to members in Southern California who may be able to help, also
Oregon and Washington. Allyn Barrows, member from Southern California will do the Queen
Mary Festival in Long Beach for us. Many thanks to him! Steve Wallace (Brother of our
President JoAnne) will also be able to help us, and hopefully others. Anyone interested please
 contact us.
It is a very rewarding experience and we met wonderful people wherever we went. Our
enthusiastic reception by games officials and clansmen proves that Clan Wallace needs to
continue to be a part of the Scottish Highland Games. It will take every Wallace to put forth the
effort to make our clan bigger and stronger.
We want to thank three very special clan members who have helped us financially in support of
the games last year. They are Charles T. Wallace of Tuscon, AZ, Robert B. Wallace of Sonoma,
CA and C. Wayne Wallace of Merced, CA Thanks Guys!
Editors Note: Barbara and I ask that if you can help, please do so. We also want to thank
Dick, Janice, Charlie T., Robert B., and C. Wayne Wallace, they deserve recognition as
Clansmen of the Year for the job they have done on the west coast. Our thanks to you all.
Thanks to Chuck Bearman, we have finally located Tim Young after first hearing about him 2
« years ago from a member in Nashville, TN. All we knew about him was that a young man
with an outstanding display which won first place for the most educational tent at Murfreesboro
 in 1995.
With the information from Chuck, we contacted Tim to thank him for his efforts. On
November 24, we received a check and application from him. We are happy to give Tim a
special welcome after devoting his efforts for two years to a wonderful Wallace tent.
He called when he received our letter to thank us for contacting him. He has 11 brothers and
sisters, most of whom attend the two games as does his mother. Pictures of his family taken at
the games show obvious love among them.
Beside winning first place for the most educational display at the games, one picture shows 7
brothers in Wallace Tartan sporting medals for winning the Clan Tug O' War. It is a mighty
 handsome bunch.
This year Tim will expand to a new game in New Harmony IN. Not only are we happy to
have Tim as a member and Convener, we are proud to have such an energetic, devoted person.
A picture of Tim and his family can be seen on the new Clan Wallace Society Picture Album, see
 article below.
We received a note from a new member, Wendy Wallace Borders of Kansas City, MO.
Wendy will be helping out at the games in Kansas City this year. She also told us that her 12
year old daughter, Suzanne, plays the pipes and in the William Jewell Caledonian Pipe Band. 12
years old! The band's goal is to compete in the world championships in Edinburgh in the year
 2000.

                       CLAN WALLACE ON THE INTERNET

Larry Slight, Clan Wallace Webmaster, has added a new address for the Society Homepage.
The new address is: http://www.ClanWallace.org This address will automatically link to the
original address, which has not gone away. This new address will allow Larry to move the actual
page if necessary without forcing other people to change their pointers and links.
There is now a Clan Wallace Society Picture Album on the Internet. It is part of my personal
home page, but can be entered directly at the following address:
 http://geocities.com/heartland/1719/cwspics.html
The album features pictures of our members taken at games and social functions across the
U.S. and Canada. This is my attempt to put a face with a name so that our membership, now
approaching 600 members can get to know each other. I will change the pictures periodically as
I receive new ones. If any of you would like to share your pictures you can either send me a
print and I will scan it, or if you have digital images (JPG) zip them and E-mail them to me with a
 brief description.

                              Scottish Trivia

In the early 1960's Towser, a mixed breed cat, arrived at the Glenturret Distillery in Scotland. A
representative from the Guiness Book of World Records spent weeks there to observe her
activity. An average number of mice that she caught per day multiplied by the number of days
she lived calculated to 28,899 mice caught in her 24 years. She was named World Mousing
 Champion.
Towser died in 1987 and has a bronze statue at the distillery to honor her. Amber, a stray,
appeared in 1989. Amber had a litter soon after she arrived. One kitten, named Nectar, was kept
and the others adopted. Both Amber and Nectar seem to be too lazy to beat the record set by
 Towser.

                    NATIONAL TARTAN DAY

A resolution has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to make April 6th a permanent National
Tartan Day. This is something that we have wanted for a long time. In order for it to become a
permanent thing, it must be introduced and passed by both houses of Congress. It has currently
been sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee where it sits. We need to get them to bring it to the
 floor for a vote.  Members of that committee are: Hatch, UT; Thurmond, SC; Grassley, IA;
Specter, PA; Thompson, TN; Kyl, AZ; DeWine, OH; Ashcroft, MO; Abraham, MI; Sessions,
AL; Leahy, VT; Kennedy, MA; Biden, DE; Feinstein, CA; Feigold, WI; Durbin, IL; and
Torricelli, NJ; If you live in one of those states please write to the senator listed and ask them to
bring the resolution to the senate floor for a vote. We also need to find a member of the House
of Representatives willing to introduce it there. One member is attempting to engage Rep.
Duncan (TN) for this endeavor. Once that has been done, we need for each member of the Clan
Wallace Society to contact their Representative and Senators and ask them to support and vote
for this resolution. Please send letters, they get more attention than E-mail or Fax's. We hope
all of you will support us in this effort.
