Oh, no you don't.After weeks of unseasonably cold temperatures and late rains, the weekend of April 25-26, this year, came on sunny and fair with just enough breeze to keep everyone comfortable at the 134th Sacramento Valley Scottish Games and Gathering on the Yolo County Fairgrounds in Woodland, CA, 13 miles north of the Sacramento airport. It is a much smaller event than the Pleasanton Games, but a wonderful venue and a great effort on the part of the Caledonia Club of Sacramento and all the terrific volunteers that make it possible. This year seemed even bigger and better yet.
My family and I went for the first time last year and everyone had such a great time they all wanted to come back this year and bring more family.
The pipes and harpists were a special favorite of my brother-in-law and son-in-law. And of course the athletic events amazed us all. Another favorite spot was the live History area and the very knowageable and accommodating members of the St Giles Guild and their "Court of Queen Mary". All the animal events (Sheep Dog Trials, Scottish Animals Exhibits, Frisbee Dog's, and Border Collies Agility Demo) were favorites with the ladies. It was my sister's first time and now she's thinking kilts with hose should be mandatory men's wear everywhere.
With all the walking and shopping to be done it was wonderful to stop along the way to rest or eat and listen to so much music (Golden Bough, Colin Grant-Adams, Culann's Hounds, and Molly's Revenge) or watch the awesome dance groups (Glenn Mohr-Sacramento RSCDS, Ar Doigh, White Heather Scottish Dancers, Stepping Out with the Caper Kids, and New World Scottish Dancers) show their stuff.
