Burns Statue Restoration ProjectPursuant to our Articles of Incorporation and by-Laws, the Society recently contributed $360 to the Milwaukee (WI) St. Andrews Society. Member's donations to the CWS Rewards Program and membership dues make such donations possible. The Societies contribution will be recognized with a brick that is scheduled to be laid during October 2008.
The CWS brick will become part of a new apron around the statue of Robert Burns in Burns Square. Nearly one hundred years ago the Milwaukee Saint Andrews Society presented the 12' tall, 2,200 pound statue to the city. It is a duplicate of the Burns statue in Kilmarnock, Scotland. Wisconsin weather has taken a toll of the statue and the county park system cannot preserve and maintain the statue due to constrained budgets. Consequently, The Milwaukee St Andrews Society has reached an agreement with the county to create a preservation project. The project is selling engraved bricks to raise funds to preserve and maintain the statue.
The CWS brick will be engraved with the Wallace cap badge and the words: "Clan Wallace Society Worldwide 2008."
More information about the Burns Statue Restoration and Preservation Project is available at the Milwaukee St Andrews Society Buy A Brick web page and on page 55 of the May/June 2008 issue of The Highlander Magazine.
Thank you to the membership for making it possible for your Society to support this Scottish heritage preservation effort.

Presidential Proclamation makes Tartan Day official!!!President George Bush today signed a document proclaiming April 6, 2008, as National Tartan Day! This is a huge victory for us Scottish Americans. We give humble thanks to the members and associates of The Scottish Coalition USA, and many of you, for your ten years of hard work to make this possible.
Since the passing of Senate Resolution 155 in 1998 and House Resolution 41 in 2005, The Scottish Coalition and others have been actively asking the American-Scottish community to request the President of the United States to sign a proclamation proclaiming April 6, in perpetuity, as National Tartan Day. Today's Presidential Proclamation makes National Tartan Day a national holiday observance on every April 6th, similar to Flag Day, thus placing National Tartan Day on the official United States of America calendar.

William Wallace's Crawford ConnectionC. Joanne Crawford, Ph.D., Vice President, Clan Crawford Association, has written a very interesting paper on the connections between William Wallace and the Crawfords. This article was published in a recent Clan Crawford Newsletter. We thought Clan Wallace members should know this part of the Wallace history.
